first African American to hold the role.
Appointed in 2019 and twice elected,
he brings over 20 years of public safety
experience. A forward-thinking leader,
educator and advocate, Sheriff Tony is
committed to modernizing law enforcement,
strengthening community trust and advancing
public safety through integrity and innovation.
ABOUT
Born in 1978 in the Badlands of North Philadelphia, Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony was shaped by resilience and determination. A graduate of Olney High School, he went on to earn a Bachelor’s in Criminology from Florida State University and a Master’s in Criminal Justice from Nova Southeastern University. In 2024, he completed his Ph.D. in Criminal Justice with a focus on Organizational Leadership. His academic journey continues to inform his data-driven, evidence-based approach to public safety leadership.

Recognizing the need for enhanced preparedness in both law enforcement and civilian sectors, he founded Blue Spear Solutions in 2015. The company specializes in active shooter training and emergency response, equipping organizations with the skills and strategies needed to respond effectively to critical threats.

AS YOUR SHERIFF
Since accepting office, Sheriff Dr. Tony has implemented transformative changes within the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO). Under his leadership, BSO has focused on enhancing professionalism, accountability, and inclusivity within law enforcement. His administration has prioritized public trust, officer training, and community-oriented policing.
Sheriff Dr. Tony has led initiatives to modernize policing strategies, integrate new technologies, and develop robust training programs for deputies. His commitment to transparency and public safety has strengthened relationships between law enforcement and the community, fostering a safer and more cohesive environment.
In 2024, Sheriff Dr. Tony launched the grand opening of BSO’s 75 million dollar Research Development and Training Center (R.D.T.C.). According to the Florida Sheriff’s Association, BSO’s R.D.T.C. is the finest public safety training facility in the state of Florida.

In addition to his law enforcement career, Sheriff Dr. Tony has been deeply involved in education. He has served as an adjunct professor at institutions such as Nova Southeastern University, Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University and University of South Florida, His expertise in criminal justice has influenced countless students, shaping the next generation of law enforcement professionals.
His academic contributions extend beyond teaching, as he actively engages in research and policy discussions on law enforcement best practices, crisis management, and organizational leadership.
