Born in 1978 in the Badlands of North Philadelphia, Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony was shaped by resilience and determination. A graduate of Olney High School, he went on to earn a Bachelor’s in Criminology from Florida State University and a Master’s in Criminal Justice from Nova Southeastern University. In 2024, he completed his Ph.D. in Criminal Justice with a focus on Organizational Leadership. His academic journey continues to inform his data-driven, evidence-based approach to public safety leadership.

    Sheriff Dr. Tony directed law enforcement teams in criminal investigations, crime prevention and community engagement while ensuring strict compliance with legal standards and departmental policies. Overseeing key programs, interagency collaborations and agency-wide initiatives, he specialized in tactical operations, including high-risk warrant service, hostage rescue, crowd management and dignitary protection.

    FOUNDER

    Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony is the author and creator of Bleeding Control Techniques – M.A.R.C.H., an innovative online training program that has become the premier standard for Broward County Public Schools. In 2025, more than 35,000 teachers and staff members successfully completed the course and earned certification, making Broward County the first school district in the nation to achieve full-scale implementation of this life-saving initiative.

    Sheriff Dr. Tony serves as the chief executive of one of Florida’s largest public safety agencies, leading efforts to protect over 2 million residents and 12 million annual visitors in Broward County. Overseeing all administrative and operational functions of a 5,900-member organization, he provides strategic leadership across Law Enforcement, Detention, Fire Rescue and Emergency Services, Administration and the Department of Preparedness and Response. Responsible for a $1.2 billion budget, Sheriff Dr. Tony ensures ethical, effective allocation of resources while maintaining full compliance with legal and governmental standards.

  4. NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY
    DOCTOR

    Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony earned his Doctorate of Philosophy in Criminal Justice, specializing in Organizational Leadership, from Nova Southeastern University in June 2024. His dissertation, titled “Measuring Organizational Culture and Leadership in Law Enforcement Agencies,” reflects his commitment to enhancing public safety through evidence-based leadership. Sheriff Dr. Tony is the first and only current sheriff in Florida to hold a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice.

Recognizing the need for enhanced preparedness in both law enforcement and civilian sectors, he founded Blue Spear Solutions in 2015. The company specializes in active shooter training and emergency response, equipping organizations with the skills and strategies needed to respond effectively to critical threats.

Since accepting office, Sheriff Dr. Tony has implemented transformative changes within the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO). Under his leadership, BSO has focused on enhancing professionalism, accountability, and inclusivity within law enforcement. His administration has prioritized public trust, officer training, and community-oriented policing.

 

Sheriff Dr. Tony has led initiatives to modernize policing strategies, integrate new technologies, and develop robust training programs for deputies. His commitment to transparency and public safety has strengthened relationships between law enforcement and the community, fostering a safer and more cohesive environment.


In 2024, Sheriff Dr. Tony launched the grand opening of BSO’s 75 million dollar Research Development and Training Center (R.D.T.C.). According to the Florida Sheriff’s Association, BSO’s R.D.T.C. is the finest public safety training facility in the state of Florida.

In addition to his law enforcement career, Sheriff Dr. Tony has been deeply involved in education. He has served as an adjunct professor at institutions such as Nova Southeastern University, Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University and University of South Florida, His expertise in criminal justice has influenced  countless students, shaping the next generation of law enforcement professionals.

 

His academic contributions extend beyond teaching, as he actively engages in research and policy discussions on law enforcement best practices, crisis management, and organizational leadership.
